Your resource for Frostwire alternatives.
Frostwire started out as a fork of Limewire, with much of the same functionality. However, as the years went by, Frostwire adapted to the times and shifted its focus completely to Bittorrent.
Unfortunately, it’s had its issues over the years, and many would argue that there are better torrent clients out there.
In this article, we’ll talk about whether Frostwire still works, as well as provide some great Frostwire alternatives, including both torrent clients and filesharing programs.

Does FrostWire Still Work?
Though Frostwire has been around for a long time and gone through plenty of ups, downs, and changes along the way, it does still work. And there’s an app available for Windows, Mac, Linux, and even Android.
However, if you haven’t used Frostwire in a long time, you should know that it is only a Bittorrent client now. The Gnutella functionality, which allow P2P filesharing a la Limewire, was removed completely in 2014.
Note: Frostwire’s Android app has been removed from the Google Play Store on multiple occasions, including in late 2023, but it is up and working as of writing this article.
Frostwire Alternatives: Torrent Clients
Though it started as a fork of Limewire, Frostwire later added Bittorrent functionality, eventually becoming a full-on torrent client. Fortunately, if you’re looking for an alternative torrent client, there are several great ones to choose from.
1. qBittorrent

qBittorrent is considered by many (including us) to be the best torrent client available. It’s fast, it’s lightweight, it’s open-source, and it’s not filled with annoying ads and bloatware, like some other clients.
You can see our full qBittorrent review for more info.
2. Deluge
Deluge doesn’t have quite the following that qBittorrent does, but it’s a solid torrent client in its own right, so it’s worth checking out if you want to expand your options.
You can see our full Deluge review for more info.
3. uTorrent
uTorrent is the most popular torrent client – and has been for years. However, unlike Frostwire (and the other two clients on this list) it’s not ad-free nor open-source. But, hey, a lot of people like it, so it’s worth mentioning.

Frostwire Alternatives: Filesharing Software
If you’re looking for something that is more like old school Frostwire, when it was merely a fork of Limewire, there is one great alternative: Soulseek.
1. Soulseek

Soulseek doesn’t function exactly like the old school P2P apps, like Limewire and Frostwire, but it’s quite similar.
In fact, in some ways, it’s better. For instance, rather than being forced to search for and download a bunch of individual songs from an album, Soulseek allows you to queue the whole album for download with a single click.
That being said, Soulseek is mostly for music, and there’s a whole lot of it – with good audio quality, to match.
You can see our How to Use Soulseek Guide for more info.
Frostwire Alternatives: Wrap-Up
So, let’s sum it all up: yes, Frostwire still works, though it’s no longer the Limewire-like app that it used to be. Instead, it’s a full-on torrent client, but there are a handful of alternatives that do the same thing, better.
