How Many Usenet Providers Do You Need

If you’re new to Usenet, getting everything set up can be a little confusing. There’s providers, indexers, downloaders, newsreaders. It’s hard to know what and which you actually need.

Well, you absolutely do need a provider. That’s a given. But how many Usenet providers do you need? One? Two? Five?

We’ll explain everything you need to know below.

Do You Need More Than One Usenet Provider?

No, you don’t need another Usenet provider. A single, high-retention provider, like Newshosting, will allow you to download tons of content with no problems.

In fact, if you’re only interested in the newest content, you don’t even need such high retention.

However, if you’re a real media addict – whether it’s movies, TV shows, music, or audiobooks – you may occasionally have failed downloads. Especially if you’re interested in older or classic content. It's also common for the hottest files that get taken down quickly.

This could be avoided by having another provider (or two) on another backbone or different takedown type

What Are Usenet Backbones?

Usenet backbones are basically the foundation of Usenet and allow people to access and post on newsgroups.

Different backbones have different retention lengths (from 500 to 5,000+ days), locations (US or EU), takedown types (DMCA or NTD), and account types (monthly or block).

For the absolute best Usenet coverage, it’s a good idea to have multiple providers with different backbones.

How Many Usenet Providers Do You Need? Monthly vs. Block Accounts

That being said, you don’t need to have a bunch of monthly subscriptions. Instead, it’s best to have one monthly unlimited plan, preferably on the Omicron backbone, along with a few block accounts.

If you set up your NZB downloader properly, it’ll download from your unlimited account first, and only pull from your block account(s) if the file fails. With this setup, your flat-fee block accounts should last you a while. And that’s less money out of your pocket.

An example setup would be something like:

Newshosting (monthly) + UsenetExpress (block) + Usenet.Farm (block)

If you’re in Europe, you could consider swapping Eweka or TweakNews for one of the above, since they’re based in the EU. Though Newshosting, UsenetExpress, and Usenet.Farm all have EU servers as well.

How Many Usenet Providers Do You Need? Wrap-Up

As you can see, the number of Usenet providers you “need” depends on your own usage and budget. For heavy downloaders (or those interested in older/niche content), it’s worth shelling out a few extra bucks for a couple block accounts to backup your unlimited account.

However, it’s definitely not necessary. A high-retention Omicron provider will still grab most things without a problem, though you will have the occasional failed download.
