All torrent file-sharing is facilitated by ‘torrent trackers’. These are servers acting silently in the background which match torrenters, while regulating and coordinating the transmission and reassembly of shared torrent files.

How to Add the Torrent Tracker List
Find the torrent trackers in your Bittorrent client
For example, if you use the qBitTorrent client, select ‘Trackers', then right-click and choose add new trackers (select the screenshot to enlarge).
A window will appear asking you to enter a list of new torrent trackers 1 per line (select the screenshot to enlarge).
Select paste and voila, the list of 300 torrent trackers will be added!

What are Public Torrent Trackers?
Public trackers (sometimes called open trackers) let you find and download torrent files without registration. If you've torrented before or simply follow the news, you've likely heard the names of some of the most famous (or infamous) public trackers before.
These sites are open to the public and free to use, which makes them very accessible to most people. In fact, the majority of torrenters rely completely on public trackers.
Disadvantages of Public Torrent Trackers
That being said, public trackers do have some drawbacks that are worth mentioning.
Malware Risks of Public Torrent Trackers
There are several disadvantages of public trackers, but this one is the most important.
Several studies on BitTorrent have shown that a portion of torrent payloads contain malware. These can be more serious, like "Trojan" viruses, or more of a nuisance, like pop-ups and ads.

Privacy and Security of Public Trackers
Another major concern of public torrents are their lack of security. You see, when you download a torrent, you're downloading "peer to peer" or p2p. In other words, you're "sharing" the file with other users, just like you.
Unfortunately, members of the torrent "swarm" can see each other, or at least your IP address. And since anyone can use public trackers, that means anyone can see your IP address... and use that to find your identity.
This isn't just a privacy risk, it can be a security risk if you're downloading things you shouldn't be.
Which is why you should always use a VPN when torrenting, like PIA VPN. We recommend that everyone use a VPN online, but it's absolutely crucial for people who use public torrent trackers.

Unreliable Speeds and Seeders
Another common but slightly less serious disadvantage of public trackers is their unreliability. If you're looking for the latest or most popular files, you shouldn't have an issue finding one with plenty of seeders, and it'll download quickly.
But outside of this small subset of torrents, like when looking for files that are older or less popular, things get a little more hit and miss.
For example, you might find a file with more leechers than seeders, which causes it to download slower. Many files will have only a few seeders period, which also cause them to download slowly or get "stuck" at a certain download percentage.
And then there are the tons of files with no seeders. You might need to wait hours, if not days or weeks, to download these files at all.
That's because people that use public trackers can't be counted on to seed files, especially not for long periods of time. In fact, most torrent users are "leechers" who don't seed at all after they finish downloading!

What are Private Torrent Trackers?
Unlike the popular public torrent trackers which anyone can use, private torrent trackers operate on a closed membership basis. In other words, they're restricted to members only.
Membership is usually gained through referral, as in an existing member referring a potential new member. But some private trackers do allow people to request membership, while others will open registration up briefly at certain times throughout the year.
If you don't get in, you'll have to wait for the next open registration.
Many private trackers also screen prospective members. This could be the referral mention above, or even include an online chat with site admins.
Why go through all this trouble? Why can't anyone join? Well, there are a few important reasons:
- It keeps out undesirables, like "leechers" who don't seed the files they download
- It keeps out copyright trolls and other groups that want to spy on or stop torrenters
- It keeps server load and other admin issues to a minimum
By the way, don't think it's a free for all once you get your foot in the door. Because most private trackers also have strict requirements for members, like maintaining a certain download ratio.
For instance, you'll likely be asked to seed at least as much data as you download, if not twice as much. No leeching here.
Advantages of Private Torrent Trackers
These advantages are what make private trackers so desirable for torrents, despite the effort of getting access to them.

Broad and Specialized Content
There's a private tracker for almost every type of the content, whether you're looking for movies or music or audiobooks.
Not only do private trackers offer a wide range of content, you'll also find plenty of rare content that simply isn't available on public trackers. So, if you're having trouble finding someone on your favorite torrent site, it may be worth checking a private tracker.

Fast Download Speeds
Because the private tracker community encourages and in fact enforces file-seeding (sharing) among its members, and because a large proportion of these communities have fast internet connections, the download speeds offered by private trackers can be incredibly fast.
Quality Control
Most private trackers carry only high quality content. The files are moderated and deleted when they do not meet the site’s strict quality control standards. Typically, you will not find dead, poor-quality or malware-infected torrents.
Helpful Community
Typically, members of private trackers are glad to answer your questions. Chat channels and message boards exist where you can communicate to other members, get guidance or ask for help.
But Private Trackers are NOT Anonymous
Often people assume that private trackers are anonymous and shield them from the risks of torrent monitoring. However, private trackers are just that: private. While they are certainly more private than public trackers, they are not anonymous.
Warning
Private trackers are no guarantee that your activities will remain private. Like public trackers, private trackers can also be infiltrated by unfriendly elements who want to monitor torrent activities. In both cases, the infiltrator simply joins in sharing torrents and then monitors the IP addresses of fellow torrenters he or she is connecting with.
While the barriers for such elements to join a private tracker are certainly higher than for public trackers, they're not all that difficult to overcome.
Therefore, whether you are using the most popular public torrent sites or the most niche private trackers, you should absolutely use a torrent VPN to mask your IP address and encrypt your connection. Not only will this protect you from snoops, it'll hide your activity from your own ISP.
