Is Your VPN Able to See Your Torrenting Activity?
In short, yes, they are.
Unlike your ISP, who is blocked from seeing your activity by the VPN’s encryption, your VPN is the one encrypting your data, and therefore can theoretically view your unencrypted data when it exits the VPN tunnel.
There are exceptions. For instance, if you visit a site using HTTPS encryption, your VPN provider can’t see through this. So, in the case of torrenting, they’d know which torrent site you used, but not what files you looked at or what your username is there (if you have one).
Unfortunately, this doesn’t apply to the p2p traffic from your torrent client, unless you use something like qBittorrent’s encryption feature.
But don’t get freaked out just yet. Because while your VPN provider could technically view your torrent activity:
- It’s not in their interest to do so, since it could make them liable for what you download
- If they’re not “logging” (saving a record) of that activity, it isn’t really a big deal in the long run

1. Audited No-Logs
First and foremost, you want a VPN that doesn’t keep logs. Unfortunately, not all VPNs that claim they don’t keep logs are telling the truth, as we’ve seen in the past.

2. P2P Policy
Not all VPN providers allow torrenting. For some, it’s forbidden, and for others, it’s a grey area, where it isn’t expressly promoted nor blocked.
If you want to reduce the risk of having your torrenting activity monitored by your VPN, choose one that specifically allows P2P traffic.
3. Location
Location is another consideration, though not the most important one. Basically, VPNs based in countries where:

- Surveillance is common
...may be more likely to snoop into your torrenting activities. But this isn’t a guarantee.
You can also consider using a VPN server in a country where torrenting is allowed or at least not a big deal.
