VyprVPN review: is it any good?

VyprVPN is a premiere VPN service from the good folks at GoldenFrog.  VyperVPN has a stellar reputation in the industry and is known for being a very honest VPN. For example, it bucks the trend and does not make outlandish claims about "keeping you 100% anonymous 100% of the time".

But has VyprVPN done enough to put them among the best VPN providers on the market? Let’s find out.

VyprVPN's Plans & Pricing

VyprVPN keeps it simple, with just two plans to choose from. Here’s a look at what they offer for annual plans:

  • Basic - $5.95/month  Unlimited data usage, 3 simultaneous connections
  • Premium - $4.17 6.67/month – Unlimited data usage, 5 simultaneous connections, the censorship-busting Chameleon Protocol and VyprVPN Cloud

Of course, the prices go up if you want to pay month-to-month with the basic plan at $9.95/month and the premium plan at $12.95/month. The biggest difference between the two plans are the Chameleon and VyprVPN Cloud features, which we’ll talk about later in the review.

However, we are pleased to be able to offer you special pricing for VyprVPN. Through our website, you can get VyprVPN Premium for only $4.17 per month (for a 2-year subscription). That's a massive 68% savings.

Comes with a 3-day free trial period.

Free Trial Too

If you’re not sure whether VyprVPN is the right VPN for your needs, you can take advantage of their 3-day free trial to try before you buy.

You will not be billed until your trial ends. If you are unhappy for any reason, just cancel your account within the 3-day period and you will not even be billed. That's risk-free

And yes, both plans - Basic and Premium - are eligible for the risk-free VPN trial.

VyperVPN: Where it Stands Out

There were some things we really liked about VyprVPN – and some things we didn’t. Let’s start with the areas where we think VyprVPN really shines.

Offers Some Really Strong Features

VyprVPN feature Chameleon

"Chameleon" is VyprVPN's name for a cloaked form of OpenVPN 256-bit encryption that allows you to disguise the fact that you’re using a VPN, which can help bypass VPN blocking and bandwidth throttling.

VyprVPN considers this particularly useful in places like China and Iran, where the government regulates Internet traffic, but it also comes in handy with certain Internet service providers and being able to access some censored content.

VyprVPN Cloud is designed to provide users with more security when using cloud storage services.

But that's not all!

VyprVPN has other useful features to enhance privacy and security including an NAT firewall, a VPN kill switch, DNS leak protection, and the ability to choose from multiple levels of encryption, including L2TP, PPTP, OpenVPN, and Chameleon.

Absolutely No Logging

Before November 2018, VyprVPN used to keep some connection logs for 30 days. You will see this mentioned in older VPN reviews that have not been updated.

However, since November 2018, VyprVPN is a loud and proud completely no logs VPN service.

This means VyprVPN joins the ranks of zero logs VPN services that engage in no logging whatsoever.

VyprVPN Supports Torrent File-sharing

According to its website, VyprVPN is happy to have p2p file-sharing customers. VyprVPN's support of torrent file-sharing is stated in black and white on its website here

VyprVPN happily allows torrenting.

Because VyprVPN keeps no logs, this means you are safe to download and share torrents without fear of receiving warnings or having your account closed. 🙂

In the past when VyprVPN did keep some logs, it could link specific activities taking place through its service to customers (e.g., torrent files you were downloading). In those days, you would quickly receive warnings from DMCA take-down requests. See this thread on reddit for an old example.  In fact, when we last reviewed VyprVPN in detail, we did an experiment and downloaded some copyright material using qBitTorrent. We soon received a similar warning email (see screenshot below).

Now that VyprVPN has gone completely logless, you don't have to worry about warnings like this anymore if you accidentally download copyright material with VyprVPN.

But that was then.

Now, VyprVPN is 100% non-logging and cannot link you to any of the activities you do while connected to VyprVPN. Not torrenting, not streaming, not web browsing. Nada.

Plus, VyprVPN's no logs claims have even been thoroughly audited and found to be true. In fact, VyprVPN is truly the world’s first publicly audited no-log VPN service

So, if you want the best torrent protection from your VPN (in case, for example, you accidentally download copyright material), VyprVPN is now an excellent choice for a torrent VPN.

Support for Nearly All Devices

They also provide apps for nearly every device, from Windows, Mac, and Linux to Android and iOS. The only thing missing is Windows Phone. There’s even a free and encrypted messaging app for smartphones, called Cypher.

Fast Download Speeds

While all VPNs are going to slow down your Internet connection to some degree, some are a lot better than others.

And VyprVPN falls into that ‘better’ camp, as they manage to minimize latency issues and achieve download speeds that are faster than a lot of their competitors. While we wouldn’t go so far as to call them the fastest VPN we’ve used, they’re certainly among the faster options.

Plenty of Server Locations and IPs to Choose From

VyperVPN provides users with servers in an impressive 70+ countries, with 700+ servers and 200,000+ IP addresses. That includes areas like the Middle East and Northern Africa, which are too often ignored by other VPN providers.

But why are lots of servers a good thing in the first place? For starters, they make sure users around the world – including frequent travelers – can access servers that provide good latency and speeds.

Lots of IPs also let you access content that’s location restricted, like if you want to access the BBC streaming service from Japan or watch Netflix US from Australia. And of course, a large pool of IP addresses is great for security and anonymity, which is one of the biggest reasons we use a VPN in the first place.

First-Party Software and DNS

VyprVPN uses all first-party hardware and software, from their code to their VPN servers to their DNS to their network as a whole.

Only a rare few VPN providers can make that claim. And it means that VyprVPN is able to provide better speeds, more reliability, and stronger security for their users across the board.

VyprVPN Has your Back and has Proved It

Speaking of security, it is worth noting that the company behind VyprVPN, Giganews, is legendary for protecting the interests of its customers. It has put its money where it's mouth is and battled snooping trolls, including coming out on top protecting its customers in court cases.

Good, Round-the-Clock Support

Did you run into a snag at 2 am Monday morning? No problem, because VyprVPN offers 24/7/365 support, including a live chat feature.

VyperVPN: Where it Could Improve

Okay, so we gave you the rundown of what we like about VyprVPN. Now it’s time to take a look at the areas where they come up short.

Less-Than-Stellar Pricing But We Have a Deal for You ...

At its normal prices $9.95 to $12.95 per month for 3 to 5 simultaneous connections, VyprVPN definitely isn’t the cheapest provider on the market, especially compared to a VPN like Private Internet Access which charges only $2.91/month.

Luckily, you can take advantage of our special deal and get VyprVPN Premium for only $4.17/mo for a 2-year subscription.

Comes with a 3-day free trial period.

Just remember that VyprVPN has a strict no refund policy, so make sure you thoroughly test VyprVPN for the free trial period and confirm it's the right choice for you.

Top Tip - If you are a newsgroup downloader too, you can get VyprVPN free with a Giganews Usenet account (Platinum or Diamond plans)

No Anonymous Payment Method

VyprVPN does not accept anonymous payment methods, like Bitcoin.

This will only put off the most hardcore privacy advocates who worry about any link between their personal details (via the credit card or PayPal details on file) and their Internet activity. If you want to achieve this level of complete and total anonymity by paying for a VPN with Bitcoin or gift cards, you'll have to look elsewhere.

This may not be something that all users may care about, but it’s something we at Cogipas always like to have the option for.

VyprVPN Review: Final Thoughts

There you have it. The good, the bad, and the in-between about VyprVPN. But the final question is, is VyprVPN worth it?

We’ll put it like this. VyprVPN provides good speeds, features, and support, and should satisfy most users’ needs. They have come a long way and now have a great package of features going for them.

Torrent file-sharing will love VyprVPN.

Of course, you can’t lose with their 3-day free trial, so if you like what you saw here, we’d recommend giving VyprVPN protection a try today!

[…] However, there’s no guarantee of this so it doesn’t hurt to hedge your bets and take a monthly package with VyprVPN in case Netflix eventually catches up with this VPN provider too. The big yearly discount is tempting and worth it if you will use Vypr for other online activities such as torrenting (see our VyprVPN Torrenting Review).  […]
