Usenet is an excellent way to download movies, TV shows, and more. But there’s not a lot of info out there about using Usenet for ebooks and PDFs.

With that in mind, we created this guide. Keep reading for a quick guide on using Usenet for digital books, including why you should (or should not) and how to do so.

Is It Worth Using Usenet for Ebooks & PDFs?

So, before we jump into the “how” of using Usenet for ebooks and PDFs, let’s ask another questions: should you?

The short answer: no.

But why?

The reality is, because of their small file size, text files don’t really require Usenet or even torrents. These methods are focused on sharing large files, anywhere from 1 GB to 100+ GBs. Whereas the typical ebook file is often a few MBs, at most. Even larger PDFs are typically only 100 MB or so.

Now, if that sounds a little too technical, let’s focus on the practical aspects.

Since Usenet isn’t necessary for downloading text files, well, people don’t use it for downloading text files. Or rather, they don’t upload ebooks to Usenet. Instead, they upload them to direct download sites.

These sites have many more ebooks, in a whole range of genres, formats, and languages, than you’ll ever find on Usenet.

In short, if you just want to download digital books, magazine, PDFs, manga, or the like, you’re better off using something other than Usenet. Even torrents are better for ebooks than Usenet.

How to Use Usenet for Books

Now, if you’re still intent on using Usenet for ebooks and PDFs, that’s perfectly fine.

But there’s not really a trick to it, since there aren’t any NZB sites or indexers that specialize in books. That being said, if you’re completely new to Usenet, there are two options for books:

1. NZB Sites: This is the more modern way to use Usenet. You’ll need a Usenet provider, NZB site, and an NZB downloader. For a more detailed guide, check out How to Switch From Torrents to Usenet.

Once you’re set up, just search NZB sites for the books, comics, etc. that you want.

2. Newsgroups: This is the “old school” method of using Usenet. You’ll need a Usenet provider and a newsreader. From there, you can search for “newsgroups” that focus on books, like alt.books. Then browse through the newsgroup and download any files you want.

That being said, we did warn you. So, if you don’t find what you’re looking for using these methods, go check out the previous section.

Usenet for Ebooks or PDFs: Wrap-Up

We hope you didn’t rain on your parade too much. Usenet is awesome, and we’re always recommending it. But it’s simply not a great source of ebooks, PDFs, comics, manga, etc. There are way better, cheaper, easier to use options. However, you’re free to give it a shot, whether you don’t believe us or you’re just curious.
