Are Cheap Seedboxes Worth It? Advantages and Disadvantages
If you just want to see the list, feel free to skip this part. But we figured it’d be worth letting you know what you’re getting into.
Fortunately, it’s pretty simple. The main advantage of cheap seedboxes is just that: they’re cheap. So, if you’re on a strict budget and/or don’t care about the drawbacks, then that makes them “worth it”.
On the other hand, the absolute cheapest seedboxes – or even cheapest plans of particular providers – tend to lack on a few things, the two biggest being:
- Storage space
- Support for Plex, Emby, and other apps
For instance, they may have only 50 to 300GB storage space. That’s enough for, say, a small collection of HD movies, but not a massive library – and it’ll fill up mighty quick if you prefer 4K or Full Blu-Ray.
Similarly, the cheapest plans are unlikely to allow stuff like Plex, Emby, Jellyfish and other streaming apps; this may include automation apps, like the “Arr” stack (Radarr, Sonarr, etc.) as well. You’ll be mostly stuck with the "basics".
So, what does that mean for you? Let’s break it down.
Who the cheapest seedboxes might work for:
- People who want to torrent a couple files at a time, then download to their local device
- People who want to store and seed a modest number of files, from 50GB up to a TB or two
Who the cheapest seedboxes will (probably) NOT work for:
- People who want to set up a remote streaming server
- People who want to store and seed multiple TBs of files
- People who want to highly automate their torrenting setup
To be clear, there is a “middle ground”. That is, you don’t have to break the bank just to get more storage and/or app support. You’ll just have to upgrade to, say, a $5 to $15+ per month plan, rather than the absolute bare minimum.
5 Cheapest Seedboxes
Without further ado, here’s our list. We sorted them in ascending order, from cheapest to slightly less cheap, just to make things easier for you.
iseedfast: Cheapest Seedbox
Price: $3.00 / €2.59
Storage: 50GB
At the top (or bottom?) of our list is iseedfast, which offers plans starting at just a few bucks per month. The catch? Storage is quite limited. Even their “Pro” plan only gets you 600GBs. And you’ll need to upgrade to the second cheapest plan for Plex, Arr apps, and others.
But hey, the Basic plan is dirt cheap!
GigaRapid
Price: $3.46 / €2.99
Storage: 200GB
For a few cents more, you can upgrade your storage with GigaRapid, the next cheapest seedbox. In fact, you get four-times the storage of iseedfast, for practically the same price. That being said… if you want Plex/Emby/JellyFin, you’ll need to move up several tiers.
To be clear, their Basic and Gold plans are solid deals, all things considered, but they’re no longer in “cheapest seedbox” territory.
SeedHost.eu
Price: $3.47 / €3.00
Storage: 1TB
If the low storage options above have you bummed out, you’ll like this next pick. That’s because SeedHost.eu, despite being incredibly cheap, offers a TB or more, even on their lowest priced plans.
However, Plex/Emby/JellyFin access costs more than five-times more.
Evoseedbox
Price: $5.00 / €4.32
Storage:150GB
Now we’re moving up the price scale a bit, with Evoseedbox. And yeah, it is a bit pricier than our previous picks, but it’s still quite cheap. Of course, it does have its drawbacks, including low storage.
And you’ll need to double your membership price to get access to all the apps. On the plus side, if you’re intent on streaming, it does come out to be cheaper than some of the other seedboxes on the list.
Ultra.cc: Best Cheap Seedbox
Price: $5.75 / €4.95
Storage: 1TB
So, Ultra.cc is the most “expensive” seedbox on our list, if judged only by the price of its cheapest plan. But we’re dubbing it the Best Cheap Seedbox. Why? It’s simple: value.
For starters, even their cheapest plan offers 1TB of storage. And while you’ll need to spend a bit more for Plex, Emby, JellyFin, etc., those plans start at 4TBs.
Plus, they’ve got a good reputation, and are quite popular for that reason. In short, if you’re looking for “best bang for your buck” rather than purely choosing based on which seedbox is cheapest, we’d suggest giving Ultra.cc a look.
