Seedbox vs. Cloud Torrent/Debrid: Pros and Cons Explained

There are several popular tools in the torrenting space, but not everyone understands them. So, whether you’re a newbie or have simply never tried them yourself, this article aims to give you a simple but detailed breakdown regarding seedbox vs. cloud torrent/debrid.

Keep reading to find out how they match up – and which one is right for you.

Seedbox

We’ll start our rundown with seedboxes, laying out their pros and cons in one easy-to-reference section.

Pros:

- Quick downloads: Seedboxes often boast very high-speed connections, capable of downloading at up to 10 to 20 Gbps, much faster than most at-home internet plans.

- Easy, no fuss seeding: As the name suggests, a seedbox makes seeding incredibly easy, with no need to host the files locally.

- Remote storage and streaming: If you don’t want to pay for more overpriced local storage – or you’d like to build your own personal streaming library, a seedbox can help.

Cons:

- More expensive: In general, a seedbox subscription costs more than a cloud torrent subscription.

- Less file/source variety: Seedboxes are typically for torrent files only. Whereas cloud torrenting/debrid can often handle direct downloads from file hosting sites (e.g., Mediafire, Mega) and even Usenet.

Who is it best for?

Alright, so, pros and cons are great, but let’s be more practical and talk about who should actually use a seedbox. In this case, it comes down to a couple specific cases:

- You want to seed files and/or use private trackers

- You want to remotely store and/or stream files

If you just want to torrent, then debrid – or simply a VPN – could be right for you. However, a seedbox’s ability to store, seed, and stream files long-term is what really sets it apart. If that’s what you’re looking for, then they’re absolutely a good idea.

Cloud Torrent/Debrid

Now, let’s look a little closer at cloud torrent and debrid services, to see exactly what they do and don’t bring to the table.

Pros:

- Fast downloads: Much like a seedbox, files torrented with a cloud torrent service tend to download faster than what you’d manage on your local connection.

- Easy, on-demand streaming: Not only do debrid services allow you to stream while you download, they have a large cache of popular files that you can stream on-the-fly, without even waiting at all.

- Safer torrenting: They improve your security in two ways: creating a sort of “middleman” between you and the torrent swarm, as well as changing the way you grab the file locally. Instead of using peer-to-peer downloads, which are notoriously insecure, you’ll use either direct download or streaming, both of which are safer.

Cons:

- No seeding: Unlike seedboxes, cloud torrent providers do not allow seeding. So, if maintaining your download/upload ratio is something you’re interested in, you won’t get that here.

- Not compatible with private trackers: Due to the fact that debrid services don’t seed, they’re often banned by private trackers completely. And even if they aren’t, you wouldn’t be able to maintain the required seeding ratio.

Who is it best for?

So, with the advantages and disadvantages laid out, let’s summarize by talking about who would benefit most from using a cloud torrent or debrid service:

- You want faster and more secure downloads

- You want to stream content on the fly, but don’t care about building a remote streaming library

- You don’t care about seeding or private trackers

Essentially, debrid is great for the kind of person that just wants to download and watch media, quickly, safely, and conveniently, but doesn’t care as much about storing and/or seeding said media.

Seedbox + Cloud Torrent/Debrid: Is it worth it?

By now, some people might be wondering: “Why choose? Couldn’t I just use both?”

Well, you certainly could. But in reality, the two services are simultaneously too similar and too different for that to make sense for the majority of users.

Because if you’re already using a seedbox, debrid isn’t really providing you much that you don’t already have. At the same time, if you value seeding, debrid would actually be a step down.

So, as we highlighted above, it’s more about your goals and your budget:

Do you just want to download/stream stuff? Or do you want to seed and/or build a large remote library of files, on top of downloading and streaming stuff?

If it’s the former, then you’re good with cloud torrenting, which is also a bit cheaper. If it’s the latter, then you’ll need to shell out a little more for a seedbox.

If you want the best setup, you could consider combining either service with a VPN. See our article on Seedbox vs. VPN for more info.

Seebox vs. Cloud Torrent/Debrid: Wrap-Up

Hopefully, our breakdown has helped clear up any confusion you had about seedboxes, cloud torrenting, debrid, and how they compare, both in their similarities and differences. But the tl:dr is: use a seedbox if you want to seed and potentially store media; use debrid if you just want to download/stream it.
