You’ve heard the word “torrent swarm” thrown around online, but you’re not quite sure what it is – or what it does. But not to worry.
In this article, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about a torrent warm, how they work, and how to use them to your advantage.
What is a Torrent Swarm?
So, as you might have guessed from the name, torrent swarms are related to torrent downloads, otherwise known as Bittorrent or P2P (peer-to-peer). There are numerous uses for torrenting, from downloading media to sharing scientific data.
Now, when you download a torrent, you’ll make up one of the “peers”, which describes users who are downloading (and simultaneously uploading) the file along with you.
On the other side, there are seeders, who are uploading or sharing the file for you to download.
These two sides together, seeders and peers, make up the torrent swarm. It’s simply a “swarm” or group of users that are sharing (downloading and uploading) a particular file at a particular time.
For a more detailed explanation of seeders and peers, see our article: Torrent Seeders, Leechers Peers Explained.
How Do Torrent Swarms Work?
The way torrent swarms work is also pretty simple, at least in practice.
Basically, you download a .torrent file (or copy a magnet link) and add it to a torrent client, like qBittorrent.
From there, your client will use torrent trackers attached to that file to find seeders and peers who are sharing the file… if they exist. At this point, you will join the torrent swarm and begin downloading the file to your computer.
However, there is a catch. If a file is unhealthy or dead – if it doesn’t have seeders, in other words – you’ll be the only one in the torrent swarm. Or perhaps you’ll be in a torrent swarm with only other peers.
Unfortunately, this will lead to download speeds that are very slow or completely stopped. This is why seeding torrents is so important.
But if you find yourself in this position, see our guide on How to Download a Dead Torrent.
Are Torrent Swarms Safe?
While torrent swarms are an integral part of torrenting, they’re also what make torrenting (potentially) unsafe.
You see, while you’re in the swarm, other members of the swarm can see your IP address. Not only is this a major privacy issue, it can lead to “copyright trolls” and other groups coming after you for downloading copyrighted or other material.
This is why it’s so important to use a good torrenting VPN. In short, this will hide your IP address from other members of the torrent swarm, while also encrypting your downloads, keeping your torrent activities safe from prying eyes.
Our favorite torrenting VPN is Private Internet Access VPN, if you don't already have one. It offers great value and excellent safety features.
Wrap-Up
There you have it. Now you know what a torrent swarm is, how they work, and the risks involved with joining one.
As we said, they’re pretty simple to use, as long as you have basic tools like a torrent client to interact with the swarm and a VPN client to keep you safe while doing so.
